How can i get my laptop picture and sound to work on my tv?

I have a cable for my lenovo laptop its a blue green and red one (rca i think) and it plugs into my laptop into the video port or whatever it is called. When i plug this in and plug it in my tv i get no picture on my tv. Do i have to put my laptop into
