How can I static-proof myself in a carpet-floored room, and protect any computer hardware I am working on?

I am worried about the static electricity in my room, and not sure how to remove it from myself. Since I am building a computer, and already had to RMA some parts, I am getting worried...My motherboard was either DOA or I killed it. Anyway, does anyone
Before touching any computer components, just touch your power supply unit or the inside of you computer case. this should rid you of static electricity. There are also special computer mats that remove static electricity.
